Hamsters

Updated: Mar 24, 2020

So lately I have been really obsessed with my pet hamster and there is a lot of research I have been doing which has made me realise, I know so much less about hamsters than I thought. In the enlightenment of my new discoveries, I would like to share a lot of it with you guys so that if you have a hamster or are thinking of owning one you can give it everything it needs.

This is going to be one of many posts I will be doing about hamsters so I am going to start with the basics making this post about the basic knowledge about hamsters and then later on I will be making more posts, some about hamster nutrition, about cages and enclosures, etc.

Hamsters are rodents which only became domesticated a few decades ago (in the year 1939 to be precise) so they still act very similar to the way wild hamsters do. There are different kinds of species of hamster but there are only five that are domesticated.

A few basic facts about them is that:

  • They are omnivores. Hamster will eat seeds, fruits, vegetables and even insects they find underground. The only problem is that they will eat them in different amounts because too much of some food may be bad for them, for example, they can eat fruits but too much fruit is bad because it contains sugar which hamster should not have too much of.

  • They hoard their food. Instead of eating food when they find it, they will put it in their cheek pouches until they are full and they will take it all to their home where they will keep it until they are hungry and need to eat it.

  • They are burrowers. A hamster will burrow in the ground and similar to humans, they will make different "rooms" for different things and these rooms are called chambers. They will have a chamber for sleeping, for hoarding their food and for going to the bathroom.

  • They are nocturnal beings. Hamster may come out during the day but this is not a natural thing as hamsters are nocturnal, they will only come out during the night to forage for food, to them it is too dangerous to come out during the day because that is when the predators are about looking for their food (which is the hamsters and other creatures). So during the day the hamsters will mostly be sleeping, but they also may get up for a little mid-day snack!

Thank you for reading and I'll speak to you in the next post!
